From the end of the street, I can hear a happy cacophony. In the hall I am approached by a chest of unhappy drawers. Each one tells me about their previous lives. One dated a piston engine, another was friends with a mossy tree and yet another one went to prison. The drawers’ tales unravel like ribbon on to the floor at my feet. I turn round and come face to face with a schizophrenic sofa who can’t decide between its rusty love and a crush on terra cotta. I go back out into the fresh air, feeling slightly giddy. The whole Galthazor family is there, stern to the wind in a dome with a bright horizon ahead. Two watering cans flirt with the lawn. ‘Got mit uns !’ shouts one laughing its head off. 	Alexa Brunet / Transit / Picturetank BRA0115513 The Asparite lives near the forest. He gets up at dawn and dives into piles of dead leaves. Once he is covered in humus, he stands up and becomes a tree until the middle of the afternoon. Then he combs his hair and gets into a circle with the rest of the tribe. Each Asparite then gets dressed up in various fabrics and puts on a complex perfume. He then merges with his neighbour until the whole tribe is a one big interwoven mass of subtle smells and mixed skin. A strange cry for joy rises into the sky. There are also musical notes in it. In		Alexa Brunet / Transit / Picturetank BRA0066619 In Chauvelas land, the houses are dug out of white rock. The Chauvelas are as soft as the rock he uses. When a Chauvelas is born, he already had wrinkles and white hair. He keeps both until he dies and everything is buried with him. Chauvelas always die on their 30th birthday. On that day hi seye becomes a vast ocean and his soul floats away. The Chauvelas, who is by nature gentle and calm, sometimes goes into terrible tantrums, when he is angry. There are usually several reasons : a slug on his lettuce, or a word that was badly pronounced by someone. You have to be careful when you are with one. The day I visited one, I saw one of these tantrums. For obscure pyschological reasons, he went into a fit, going round in circles and with his face up to the sky. He then ran on the roof of his house where he hit and shook bamboo stalks that had planted for this very reason. Other Chauvelas would rather hide away in little earthen domes that they call ‘BBBrouuuissou’, only coming out when they have calmed down. The Chauvelas is a lone creature, likes to eat vegetables he has grown himself and likes national holidays. Prune ovens in a troglodyte site.

Sometimes a Boun can want to leave his house and falls into a 60m drop, breaking a rib. As a joke, his house had landed on the roof of a block of flats in Stara Zagora in Bulgaria. It was several months before it would deign to go back to its original place. For a while now the Boun house has been more and more flighty. The Boun has written a list of everywhere it has landed in the past year : an underwater marine base in the Pacific, a peak in the Andes, and iceberg. Alexa Brunet / Transit / Picturetank BRA0108636 Here are a few of the Rabamane’s cousins. The tree that goes through the roof is a lime tree. The tree’s tongues come out at the bottom of its trunk. It is a very chatty tree that tells funny stories, or not. I was lucky enough to hear some of them. The Palabruze next to me accompanied the tree’s tales with a little string instrument he had built himself. When the tree is too chatty, his wife cuts his tongues off and they grow again in spring. The tree then starts rabbiting on in a hesitant way and gets more and more chatty as the season goes on. He dug everything he could lay his hands on : blackboards, the lime tree in the garden, sometimes his ears of the living room walls. Each time he dug and dug until everything was in shreds.
