Je me suis rendue en Mongolie au printemps 2003 pour photographier les hôtels touristiques d'Oulan-Bator et donner à voir un aperçu alléchant du pays. D’après ma mission, "photographier les steppes", qui stipulait qu’en tant que photographe de voyagiste, je devais avoir un aperçu du mode de vie nomade de la diversité des paysages, un chauffeur, un traducteur et un véhicule ont été gracieusement mis à ma disposition pendant deux semaines. Pour les Mongols, mes images devaient illustrer ce circuit " classique ", d’Oulan-Bator au désert de Gobi, fait pour Européens en mal d’immensité. Pour moi, VOIR la Mongolie impliquait la nécessité de s’échapper hors des sentiers rabattus de l’imagerie touristique. Ce besoin de réalité palpable passait autant par l’exploration des bourgades et des stations services, que la recherche de rencontres avec les Mongols. "Eastern", né de mon "Road Movie" mongol, est une manière de saisir à travers la photographie la notion d’espaces habités, et de mettre l’accent sur les traces de l’intégration de ce pays au village global. I went to Mongolia in the spring of 2003 as a travel agency photographer. My mission, "to photograph the steppes," implied that I had to give an overlook of the nomadic way of life and display the landscape‚s diversity. I was supposed to photograph tourist hotels in Ulan-bator and to give an appealing vision of the country. A driver, a translator and a vehicle were at my disposal for two weeks. For the Mongolian people, my pictures were ment to illustrate this classical tour from UB to the Gobi desert, intended to respond to the exotic needs of Western tourists. For me, however, to truely see Mongolia, I had to get away from the overexposed clichés about the country. This need for tangable reality found its expression both through the exploration of small towns and petrol stations and through encounters with local people. "Eastern" is drawn from my Mongolian „road movie." It is a way of capturing through photography the notion of inhabited spaces. It also emphasizes traces of the global integration of this country. This series is exhibited at the espace Transit in Monpellier from March 5th through April 5th, 2004.
